Epsom Salt Bath – Your Relaxing Supplement

When was the last time you had a bath?  What about an Epsom salt bath?  Epsom salt is not the salt we eat (sodium chloride), it is magnesium sulphate.  Don’t ingest it because it has a laxative effect!

Magnesium sulphate or magnesium bath salts (magnesium chloride) are helpful for muscle recovery, aches, pains and tightness.  Plus improving sleep quality.  A small amount of magnesium is absorbed through the skin.  Magnesium is required for muscle relaxation (while calcium is required for muscle contraction).  Epsom salt is absorbed through the skin straight to the muscles where it is needed most.

Start with one cup of Epsom salt, use one-and-a-half cups in your second bath and continue with two cups from your third bath.

For the full pampering experience, apply a face mask, light a candle, turn the bright bathroom light off, and add 10 drops of an essential oil of your choice.  Lavender is beneficial to relieve stress and anxiety.  There are many other essential oil blends for relaxation, stress and sleep.

Soak for 15-20 minutes.  During this time, meditate or do your diaphragmatic breathing.  Listen to a meditation app or turn on some relaxing music.  If you prefer silence, enjoy the silence.  Epsom salt baths are extremely detoxing, hence why it is recommended to “start low and go slow”.  If you soak for much longer, you may start to reabsorb the toxins that your body has excreted out.

Remember to rehydrate afterwards.  You sweat a lot in a hot bath, you do not realise how much you are sweating as you are submerged in water.  Similarly to swimming for exercise.

Epsom salt can be found at your local health store or even the supermarket.  Magnesium oil or lotion is magnesium chloride.  This is more easily absorbed into the body, however, you will not reap the relaxation benefits of a bath.  Magnesium oil or lotion is a good alternative for people who do not have a bath.  Epsom salt is more popular, but if you have access to magnesium bath salt (magnesium chloride) it is superior.

While other people treat themselves to a piece of cake or chocolate bar, treat yourself to an Epsom salt bath.  Aim to have one a week.  This is the ultimate health-promoting treat that your body deserves.  Make this your weekly ritual.
